Victoza and Saxenda are both liraglutide, made by Novo Nordisk. Victoza is approved for type 2 diabetes at a maximum daily dose of 1.8 mg; Saxenda is approved for chronic weight management at a higher maximum daily dose of 3 mg.
Why the split branding
Regulators evaluate and approve a drug for each specific indication separately, and manufacturers often market the same molecule under different names by indication to keep dosing, labeling, and marketing distinct for prescribers and patients.
Not interchangeable at the pharmacy
Because the approved doses and labeling differ, a pharmacy generally can't substitute one for the other — a prescription written for Saxenda is filled as Saxenda, not as a higher quantity of Victoza.
