Saxenda vs. Wegovy: An Older GLP-1 Against the Current Standard
Before Wegovy, there was Saxenda — a daily liraglutide injection with a smaller average weight-loss effect and a different dosing rhythm.

Saxenda (liraglutide) was approved for chronic weight management in 2014, several years before Wegovy. It's injected daily rather than weekly, at a lower molecular potency per dose than semaglutide.
Why prescribers moved toward Wegovy
Once weekly semaglutide reached the market, many clinicians and patients shifted toward it, citing the once-weekly dosing schedule and trial data showing a larger average weight-loss effect. Saxenda remains an approved, available option, including for some patients who don't tolerate semaglutide well.
Still a valid clinical option
A drug being older doesn't mean it's obsolete — Saxenda has a longer real-world safety track record than newer GLP-1 drugs, which some clinicians weigh for specific patients, including some adolescent prescribing scenarios where it holds a separate approval.
