GLP-1 Drugs and Adolescents: What's Approved and What Isn't

A small number of GLP-1 drugs carry adolescent approvals for obesity or diabetes. Here's which ones, and what the approval actually covers.

Wegovy holds FDA approval for chronic weight management in adolescents 12 and older with obesity, alongside its adult indication. Saxenda holds a similar adolescent obesity approval. Approval for adolescent use is drug-specific, not a category-wide green light.

Why age matters for approval

Pediatric and adolescent approvals require separate clinical trial data in that age group, which is why not every adult-approved GLP-1 drug has a corresponding adolescent indication, even within the same drug class.

A pediatric-specialist decision

Prescribing for adolescents typically involves a pediatric endocrinologist or obesity medicine specialist evaluating a broader clinical picture, not just a BMI number — this is a highly individualized decision outside the scope of general information.
