China: NMPA Approval Status and the Domestic GLP-1 Market
China's National Medical Products Administration has approved semaglutide for diabetes and, more recently, weight management, alongside a growing field of domestic GLP-1 candidates.

China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approved Novo Nordisk's semaglutide (marketed as Ozempic for diabetes and, later, under a separate approval for weight management) following its own review process, distinct from FDA or EMA timelines.
Prescription status
GLP-1 drugs are prescription medications in China, dispensed through hospital pharmacies and licensed retail pharmacies against a valid prescription. Online pharmacy platforms operating under NMPA-supervised rules have also become a significant channel, subject to their own verification requirements for prescription drugs.
Domestic pipeline
A number of Chinese biopharmaceutical companies have GLP-1 and dual-agonist candidates in clinical development or early domestic approval, aiming at both the diabetes and weight-management markets. This is a fast-moving area — company announcements and NMPA approval databases are the most current primary sources.
Gray-market products
As in other markets, unregulated 'research peptide' listings claiming to be semaglutide or related compounds circulate outside licensed pharmacy channels.
