State Medicaid Programs Are Diverging Sharply on GLP-1 Coverage
Some state Medicaid programs cover GLP-1 drugs for weight management; others cover them only for diabetes, or not at all. Here's why the map looks so uneven.

Unlike Medicare, state Medicaid programs have more flexibility in whether to cover anti-obesity medications, and states have made very different choices, driven largely by projected budget impact given the size of Medicaid's covered population.
Why states differ so much
States that have added coverage have generally paired it with utilization management — prior authorization, BMI and comorbidity requirements, or step therapy — to manage cost, while states that haven't added coverage have cited projected cost as the primary barrier in public budget discussions.
