Beyond diabetes and weight management, researchers are studying GLP-1 receptor agonists in clinical trials for a range of other conditions, including substance use disorders, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other neurological and psychiatric conditions.
Why the interest
GLP-1 receptors are present in areas of the brain involved in reward processing and inflammation, which has driven scientific interest in whether these drugs have effects beyond metabolic regulation — a hypothesis still being tested rather than an established clinical use.
None of this is an approved use yet
These are investigational uses studied in clinical trials, not FDA-approved indications. Positive early signals don't guarantee that a drug will eventually be approved for any of these additional purposes.
