Novo Nordisk's Latest Earnings: Wegovy Pill Under Pressure as Lilly Gains Ground

Novo's stock fell after its most recent earnings report, with Wegovy pill prescriptions softening and a closely watched trial disappointing. Here's what the numbers actually showed.

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly's most recent quarterly earnings drew opposite market reactions: Lilly's stock climbed while Novo's fell roughly 5%, widening what several outlets have described as a growing divide between the two obesity-drug leaders.

Wegovy pill volume softening

Weekly prescription volume for the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25 mg) reportedly dropped to around 163,000, and Novo ceded roughly 0.7 percentage points of U.S. obesity-market share to Lilly's Zepbound and Foundayo over the period, according to the reporting cited above.

A trial setback added to the pressure

Novo also reported that CagriSema, an experimental combination drug it had positioned as a next-generation candidate, failed to match Zepbound's blood-sugar control in a head-to-head trial readout — a result that reportedly weighed on investor sentiment alongside the sales figures.

Wegovy pill's next stop: Germany

Novo said the Wegovy pill is set to launch in Germany in September, marking its first entry into an EU market. As with any EU launch, actual patient access will depend on Germany's own reimbursement process, separate from the EU-wide marketing authorization already in place for semaglutide.

Reading a single quarter correctly

One quarter's script volume or share shift doesn't reliably predict a multi-year trend, and both companies' own investor filings are the primary source for verifying any specific figure cited in secondary coverage, including this one.
